Really bad performance problems

Really bad performance problems

I have to constantly refresh the page because once it's been open for long enough (a few minutes) it just tears down my computer to the point that even the cursor starts to lag. No matter how bad the lag is on any other web application I've used, the mouse cursor never slows down. If I weren't using a chromebook and didn't have a physical refresh button I probably would've had to restart it multiple times each time the lag got that bad. Even on my gaming laptop it still slows down eventually.

It seems to be mainly caused when zooming in and out, or at least, that accelerates it greatly. Perhaps the problem is that it doesn't clear previous renderings from the memory or something? It could also have to do with the website trying to load the hi-res images when zooming further in. That on top of both alternating between two hi-res images and possibly not clearing them from memory and loading a new iteration each time could be what's causing it. If this is the problem an easy fix could be just to load the two images (low res and hi-res versions) once onto memory and then have the computer switch between the two. I'm no programmer but I hope this helps

Hi NotGreg, thanks for your report. We unfortunately haven't had the funding to spend time optimizing moondiff performance -- I'm sure there's a lot of improvement that could be done. We're waiting to hear back about another grant. In the meantime, you might try running an instance yourself and tweaking things. Required knowledge for that git and basic javascript. Code is at https://github.com/nasa-jpl/MoonDiff

Does it help if you turn off the blinking and use the "crossfade" slider?

Performance improves a lot (for me) to switch to side-by-side view ASAP upon loading a new image set.
The blink / fade option shortly blacks out the whole screen. When my screen comes back, the website reloads but without the images. I have to reload it and be sure to quickly switch to side-by-side to keep the page active.
